Online Seminars

Just three years ago, unless you were a computer specialist, Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be safely consigned to science fiction books and movies. Then, last academic year, many of us noticed student work that majored in generalities and quoted fake references – indicators of ChatGPT and the like. Now faculty members are increasingly using AI to help generate teaching and assessment materials. But what exactly is AI? Is it already becoming more than a tool by demonstrating the beginnings of independent agency? How is it changing the world? And what does the future mean for education and research if AI continues to develop at what seems like an ever-increasing rate? Drawing on a wide-ranging panel of CUAC members at the front-line of these issues, this online seminar seeks to provide some helpful orientation. Together, we will examine the positives, the negatives and the unknowns.

We live in a world of increasingly polarized views where anyone who thinks differently from you is not seen as an opportunity to learn but an enemy to be overcome. So-called ‘’social media bubbles” do not help where we are only exposed to the voices that support what is already thought. In this context, the pursuit of truth is a conspicuous casualty. Universities and colleges have a vital role to play in helping people learn “how to disagree well” as part of teaching people how to argue. Yet, in some parts of the world, are there now some questions that cannot be asked, especially as these relate to questions of identity and diversity?
This seminar will help us explore how CUAC institutions can fulfill their vocation as places where students and faculty can argue logically and respectfully while being motivated by love and a genuine interest in the other.

The themes and keynote presentations of last year's 11th International Triennial in Melbourne were so rich and thought provoking that we want to revisit them and reflect on what was learned. For those that missed it, now's your chance to experience highlights that might offer fresh perspectives on our common work and enhance your vocation.
