Dear Colleagues,

Greetings from the Colleges & Universities of the Anglican Communion (CUAC).

As we move from summer to autumn in the north - the beginning of spring in the south - the end of the monsoon season in the east - we are all about to face a transition.  May this next season bring us fair weather, health and blessing!

Call for Papers - Prologue
Prologue, the Journal of CUAC, is next to be published in the early months of 2007.  The theme for this edition is "Anglican Higher Education", a broad theme open to wide development.   Of particular interest for this edition would be exploration of the tension in education between promoting a student's personal character formation versus objective expectations of competency and learning. As always, papers exploring the Anglican/Christian character of colleges and university programmes remain of interest, as do discussions of Chaplaincy, community and service learning, cross-cultural/Communion visits and exchanges, and vocational discernment.

Full articles are typically under 5000 words. Short reviews of books relevant to the general theme are also welcomed, as are position papers or "discussion-starters", which might be the subject of further dialogue on the CUAC web-site.

Major papers are reviewed by two referees before editorial acceptance.  The Chicago Manual of Style (http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org) is followed. Manuscripts, queries, requests for reprints and permissions, and all correspondence should be sent no later than December 15, 2006 to the New York CUAC office, or sent via E mail (office@cuac.org) or Facsimile (212.986.5039).

Call for News – Compass Points
The CUAC printed Newsletter, Compass Points, will next be published and distributed just before Christmas.  Items of interest are CUAC institutions or programmes around the globe. Articles are typically 200-300 words in length, usually supported by at least one photograph (digital format if possible).  Submissions should be sent no later than October 15, 2006 to the New York CUAC office, or sent via E mail (office@cuac.org) or Facsimile (212.986.5039).

Next Triennial Conference - Hong Kong
At a recent meeting of the CUAC Board of Trustees, the location and time of the next Triennial Conference was confirmed to be HONG KONG, at Chung Chi College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, from May 26 to 31, 2008.  The Trustees met at the college in Hong Kong to confirm the decision and initiate the planning.

The theme will be "Anglican Higher Education: the Asian Encounter" and will focus on the style and nature of higher education in the Far East and the Pacific Rim, and the opportunities in education, technology, diplomatic and church service that have become the context there for new global relationships in higher education.

The Conference will begin with an overnight trip to the Chinese mainland to Sun Yat-sen University (originally known as Zhongshan University) in Guangzhou. The Conference will feature addresses and workshops in the regular areas of interest – chaplaincies, service learning, student and faculty exchanges – but also will explore the mission of a Christian university set in Asia. There will be presentations from CUAC’s Asian Chapter members – Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines and Japan, on the history and cultural encounter of Christianity with Asian societies and cultures.

There will likely be smaller post-Conference trips to specific destinations of interest – Macau, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan.

The Board of Trustees is meeting in New York in December of 2006 to begin detailed Conference planning.

New Trustees
Two new trustees have been appointed to fulfill the terms of Prof. Isao Nagami of Ryujo Junior College, Japan - unable to continue for health reasons - and The Rev. Dr. Raymond Heslehurst of Richard Johnson College, Australia - retiring from the position of Master.

They are the Rt. Rev. David Lai, Bishop of Taiwan (St. John's University of Technology, Taiwan) and the Hon. Dr. John Bannon, Master of St. Mark's College, Australia.

They will attend the next meeting of the board in New York, December, 2006.

University Status
Two CUAC institutions have recently moved towards university status.  Full university status was granted “Trinity University of Asia" in Quezon City, the Philippines (formerly Trinity College of Quezon City).  In the UK, one of the hosts of the 2005 Triennial Conference in York is now York St John University College.  Further details in the next edition of Compass points.

Upcoming Chapter Meetings
There will be a meeting of the Principals and Chaplains of the UK colleges and Universities on 17th November, 2006 in London to reform the English Chapter of CUAC.

India Chapter meeting is scheduled for 3rd & 4th November, hosted by Bishop Heber College, Trichy.

Administrative Assistant
We welcome Tracy Andres to the CUAC office in New York as Administrative Assistant.  She has worked in the office of Anglican Global Relations of the Episcopal Church for the past eight years, and brings with her a wealth of experience of work and relationships within the Anglican Communion.

Best wishes!

(The Rev. Dr.) Don Thompson
General Secretary
