Profile

History
Church Teachers' College: Mandeville is a co-educational residential teacher training institution operated under the aegis of the Anglican Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture.  It was established in 1965 during the episcopacy of the late Rt.  Rev.  Percival Gibson, then Bishop of Jamaica, and through the motivation of the late Rt. Rev. Benjamin Vaughan, then Bishop of Mandeville.  The philosophy of the college is based upon two tenets: accent on INDIVIDUAL WORTH and accent on EXCELLENCE.  The motto of the college is " Caritate et sapientia educare." (“To nurture through love and wisdom.”)  At the outset the college offered courses leading to a certificate in teaching at both Primary and Secondary Levels.  Currently it offers courses leading to a Diploma in teaching at the Secondary Level only.  The Diploma in accredited by the Joint Board of Teacher Education of the University of the West Indies.

Mission
The mission of the college is to train men and women who:
• Will be highly competent in the application of pedagogical skills
• Will be capable of motivating those they teach
• Have a zest for knowledge so that they will be motivated to continue life-long learning
• Have developed positive attitudes, values and morals so as to be effective leaders in the communities they serve.

Campus
The college is located in the cool hills of Mandeville, the capital town of the beautiful parish of Manchester - a parish known for horticulture and for bauxite production.  Mandeville is roughly in the middle of the island of Jamaica and is approximately 62 miles from the capital city, Kingston, and 60 miles fi7om Montego Bay.  The college is situated on several acres of land at 40 Manchester Road, the site of the Old Mayflower Hotel.  Spathodia, Pouie and 'Poor man's Orchid" are principal flowering trees that enhance the ambiance of the college grounds.  Located on the campus are the Church Teachers' College Demonstration School and an Early Childhood Resource Centre.  There is also a University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre.  The College runs an Evening Institute where persons - usually young working adults, can complete their secondary education by pursuing subjects at the General Certificate in Education or Caribbean Examination Council exams.  The College, in collaboration with Temple University, offers a B.Sc. in Early Childhood Education.  Participants in this programme are graduates of teachers' colleges.

The facilities are used as a centre for University Scholarship exams and for Caribbean Examination Council exams.  Computer courses are offered to members of the local community.  Many schools in and around Mandeville use our games field for sporting activities.  Our Physical Education students are very involved in helping at, and promoting sports for persons with disabilities.  Some local clubs eg the Toastmasters' Club use our facilities for their meetings.

Student Services and Facilities
There are Halls of Residences that accommodate over 300 students.  There are a small tuck shop, a gymnasium a tennis/netball court, a swimming pool (currently non-functional), a large games field, two computer labs, science and home economics labs.  There are a student affairs office, guidance counseling facilities and dining room where three meals are served each working day.  There is a sick bay and resident nurse.
