History
York Diocesan Training School, for teacher education, opened in May 1841 with one pupil on the register, 16 year old Edward Preston Cordukes. In 1846, a ladies college was founded, which moved to Ripon, St Margarets in 1862. The 20 th century saw both institutions develop new education programs for increasing numbers of students, culminating in their unification as the College of Ripon & York St John in 1975. In 1990 we became a full College of the University of Leeds. In 1999 the Colleges Board of Governors decided to relocate all taught courses to the York campus and by the end of 2001 all students and staff had transferred across to York. In view of the change of location a new College name was chosen, York St John College.
