Profile

History
In 1992, the Provincial Assembly, the supreme governing authority of the Church of Uganda, resolved simultaneously to establish a Church of Uganda University as well as develop Bishop Tucker Theological College into a University.  Bishop Tucker Theological College was founded in 1913 in response to the growing need for Pastors in the Church.  It was the leading theological college in the Anglican Church of Uganda.  Encouraged by the basic educational facilities at Bishop Tucker Theological College, the Provincial Assembly of the Province of the Church of Uganda resolved to make Bishop Tucker Theological College one of the campuses and also the headquarters of a broad-based federal university.  Uganda Christian University was, therefore, developed out of Bishop Tucker Theological College.

Mission
Uganda Christian University is dedicated, through teaching, scholarship, service, spiritual formation, student development and social involvement, to the preparation of students for thoughtful, productive lives of Christian faith and service in their respective professions and places.

Student Services and Facilities
The Dean of Students Office is the liaison between the University Administration and the Students’ Community and coordinates co-curriculum activities.  The University Chaplaincy actively involves students in chaplaincy services through daily worship services and training in ministry and spiritual growth.  There are a variety of indoor and outdoor games and sports that are open to all students according to their gifts and interests.  Daily medical services such as clinical assessment, laboratory investigations, medical and general counseling, primary health education, and part-time doctor’s consultancy, and hospital referrals are provided at the Allan Galpin Clinic.

Spiritual Life
Morning and evening chapel services include a variety of Anglican Church liturgical styles and are provided daily, except on Saturdays.  The chaplaincy runs weekly small group Bible studies to deepen students’ disciplined and systematic reading of scriptures and equip them to maturity.  The Chaplaincy also organizes two very inspiring annual evangelistic events:  The University Mission, an evangelistic outreach, and the Missions and Ministry Conference.  Counseling on a range of issues about spiritual development, personal problems, career or other life decisions, relationships, and referrals to professional counseling are provided by the University Chaplain.

Housing
There are beautiful accommodation facilities on the University campus:  five female Halls of Residence and four male Halls of Residence.  Off-campus accommodations are also available within walking distance or a short bus ride from the campus.

Library and Internet Facilities
The Library now comprises over 45,000 volumes, 100 current periodicals, student and staff dissertations, over 200 audiovisuals, slides, microfiche, and Church archives.  In addition to textbooks and periodicals, a wealth of electronic information is available via the Internet.  The Library’s theological collection is one of the largest in East Africa.  There are 250 reading places for silent reading.  The Library also has a computer network system which allows catalogue access using the UNESCO-WINISIS software, complementing the traditional card catalogue.
