A Message from General Secretary

Welcome to the web page of the Colleges and Universities of the Anglican Communion (CUAC)!

Some 38 autonomous churches trace their roots to the Church of England and call themselves "Anglican", totaling more than 70 million members in 164 countries. The member churches of the Anglican Communion are joined together by choice in love, and have no direct authority over one another. The Archbishop of Canterbury, the head of the Church of England, is acknowledged as the spiritual head of the Anglican Communion, but does not have direct authority over any Anglican Church outside of England.

CUAC is an association of colleges and universities around the world who have historic or current ties with the various churches of the Anglican Communion, including those churches which have entered into ecumenical partnerships (unions). Many of these colleges were formed during periods of British colonization, and often through the various missionary societies of the Church of England. Like schools and colleges in England, these colonial colleges were not state-run, but "private" or the result of public and/or church philanthropy. Hence, they were almost always autonomous from the church, although active within those churches. Such autonomous colleges and universities continue to be founded in the last and current century, always committed in a major way to the common good and culture of the society in which they find themselves.

CUAC is essentially a communication and collaboration "network" which links all of these Anglican-related colleges, to enable them to undertake joint projects and programs, to exchange students and faculty, to publish literature relevant to Christian citizenship in higher education, and to promote the understanding and affection which any one part of these Anglican churches in Communion ought to have of each other.

CUAC website is designed to provide student, faculty, and inquirers with a navigation in today's world of global cross-cultural education. This webstie consolidates and summarizes resources from some 120 educational institutions on all five continents. I hope that CUAC website will be a great resource for you. And should you have questions or comments, please drop me a line!

Best wishes,
The Rev. Dr. Don Thompson
CUAC General Secretary
